MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The week of May 6-10 is National Nurses’ Week.  Mitchell has two institutions of higher learning where students may go to pursue a career in nursing, Mitchell Technical College and Dakota Wesleyan University.  The nursing degree, LPN vs. RN as an example, determines the level of education required for certification.

Lisa Williams, a nurse manager at Queen of Peace hospital in Mitchell, says that people become nurses to be of service to others by taking care of them in a caring compassionate way.  The challenges include obstreperous patient behavior and more mental health issues than in the past.

Dr. Penny Tilton, Dakota Wesleyan University’s Administrative Chair of Nursing, was recently appointed to the South Dakota Board of Nursing.  Her term on the Board of Nursing runs until October 2026.
