MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) In a proclamation posted to Facebook, Mayor Jordan Hanson declared that October 9th, 2026, will be known as Squirrel Appreciation Day stating:

“WHEREAS, the eastern grey squirrel and fox squirrel are integral and lively members of the local wildlife population, contributing to the natural charm and ecosystem of the parks, neighborhoods, and tree-lined streets throughout Mitchell; and

WHEREAS, these industrious creatures demonstrate remarkable resourcefulness, agility, and foresight through their tireless preparation for the upcoming South Dakota winter months; and

WHEREAS, squirrels play a vital role in local urban forestry by inadvertently planting future trees through their forgotten caches of nuts and seeds; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Mitchell of all ages derive great joy, humor, and connection with nature from observing the daily antics and impressive acrobatics of these bushy-tailed neighbors;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor of the City of Mitchell, South Dakota, do hereby proclaim October 9th, 2026, as

SQUIRREL APPRECIATION DAY

in Mitchell, South Dakota, and urge all residents to take a moment to admire our local squirrel population, enjoy the outdoors, and perhaps set out an extra handful of acorns or seeds in celebration.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Mitchell, South Dakota, to be affixed this 9th day of October, 2026.”
