MITCHELL S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Three candidates are running for mayor of Mitchell.  Each outlined their top three priorities if they were to be elected as Mayor of Mitchell.

Terry Sabers said the issue of the lake was a priority.  He says he will respect and abide by the vote of the people on the lake restoration project, however that vote comes out.  Sabers said the revitalization of Main Street, in cooperation with the business community, is a priority.  He also said it’s time to have a serious discussion about whether hosting major events at the Corn Palace (i.e. state tournaments) are opportunities that don’t exist anymore for the facility and while the Corn Palace should be maintained and preserved, a different set of priorities for the building may be appropriate.

Jordan Hanson indicated that instilling a more friendly and responsive customer service mindset in City employees is a priority, should he be elected mayor.  Hanson said too much emphasis is being placed on the lake and the Corn Palace while other priorities that matter more and to many more people are being ignored.  He would change the focus on which items have priority in the City.  His third priority is to bring activities to town so that individuals and families always have something to do.

Incumbent Mayor Bob Everson says he wants to finish a number of projects that he has started as mayor.  The lake is among those but that’s in the hands of the voters, so Everson’s priorities are working with Main Street businesses to ensure the vitality and success of the downtown corridor, come to a decision about the Corn Palace renovation project in conjunction with citizens and in cooperation with the City Council and to make sure that Mitchell continues to provide and attract activities for people to do.

Municipal elections will be held in Mitchell on June 4, 2024.
