MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell Clinic provides medical services to the inmates of the Davison County Jail under a yearly $43,500 contract. That contract includes $35,000 for three doctor visits a week and $8,500 for a nurse to visit the jail once a week and for 24/7 on call medical services. The contract expires on December 31, 2024, and Mitchell Clinic has said they will not renew the contract. Sheriff Steve Harr reported on Yankton County’s solution when that county jail was thrust into the same situation. That solution was to hire a part-time nurse who would be on call 24/7 with weekly visits in person at the jail. The Davison County Commission didn’t feel that coverage would be adequate and also that it would be abusive of the person who was hired to provide that service.
Sheriff Harr was instructed by the Davison County Commission to research other alternatives and to come back to the Commission with some suggestions at a later meeting.
