MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota participates in a consortium  that offers lotto opportunities like Powerball and Mega Millions.  That participation is voluntary, but it comes with conditions.  South Dakota has no say in the odds, pricing or prize levels.

The national game, Mega Millions, has announced that they will change the price of a ticket from $2 to $5 starting on April 5, 2025.  Also, on that date the minimum prize will move from $20 million to $50 million while the odds of winning, which currently stand at approximately 306 million to one, will improve to 1 in 278 million in April of 2025.  If South Dakota does not want to accept these changes, then the state must quit selling Mega Millions tickets.

Lottery officials reported $9.5 million in Mega Millions sales in the last fiscal year, which ended on June 30, 2024.  The Lottery Commission has indicated that they will accept the Mega Millions new conditions next April and see what happens to sales rather than just give up any Mega Millions revenue to the state coffers.
