MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) There was no groundbreaking ceremony when the new MHS construction was begun so Dr. Joe Childs, Superintendent of Mitchell Public Schools, thought a “beam signing” ceremony would be an appropriate commemoration of the construction of a new high school.
The beam will hold up the roof connecting the new construction with the MCTEA building. The MCTEA building was first constructed in 1968 as the original Mitchell Vocational School, as it was known then. The beam will be the main support and be visible to those entering the new building. Several students and community members were given the opportunity to sign the beam. Past and present members of the Mitchell School Board, members of the MHS Student Council and community members involved in the “Vote Yes” committee that led the charge to get the bond issue passed to finance the athletic portion of the building were on hand to put their John Hancock’s on the beam.
MHS Senior and Student Body President Ava Brennan (pictured above) was the first to sign the beam.
