The Mitchell baseball team had a heartbreaking finish to their season on Saturday, falling to Sioux Falls O’Gorman 4-3 on a walk-off single at the Class A region tournament.

The Kernels started off strong with 3 runs on 3 hits in the first inning, but then only managed 3 hits the rest of the way as the Knights rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning.

Mitchell even had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 9th inning with a lead-off double by Jake Helleloid, but the Kernels were unable to capitalize as they had two failed bunt attempts and came up empty.

In the bottom of the ninth, a single by Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Leo Hueners scored the game-winning run for the Knights and ended the Kernels’ season.

Sam Stukel led the Knights going 3-4 at the plate, while Reece Arbogast pitched a complete game for O’Gorman, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts. The Kernels were led by Parker Bollinger, who went 2-5 at the plate.

Mitchell finishes their season at 16-13.
