MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Since 2012, communities across the nation have been celebrating Welcoming Week, and this year marks Mitchell’s second year of participation. The Mitchell Area Inclusion Coalition, dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment for all residents, visitors, and newcomers, is proud to host the festivities.

“Newcomers are a vital part of our community,” said Matt Christiansen, a leader within the Coalition. “They bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, start businesses, and contribute to the vibrant culture of Mitchell. Embracing and welcoming others is essential if we want our community to grow and prosper.”

As part of Welcoming Week, the Coalition is hosting two key events:

Collegepalooza: Thursday, September 12th, from5-8 p.m. at the Corn Palace Plaza. This event is specifically tailored for new and returning students from Dakota Wesleyan University and Mitchell Technical College.

Community Access Resource Expo (C.A.R.E.): Tuesday, September 17th, at the Corn Palace. This family-friendly event will feature over 35 vendors showcasing a wide array of services and organizations available to the Mitchell community, including SDSU Extension, Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota, the Salvation Army, CASA, and many more. There will be a FREE light meal sponsored by County Fair available to the first 200 people, Free Drawings, an Opportunity to Paint a community canvas, Storytime Hosted by the Mitchell Public Library, and Fun Prints provided by 401 Create by LifeQuest

“Our family moved to Mitchell during the pandemic, and we were grateful for the warm welcome we received. This Expo is to highlight how amazing and community oriented Mitchell truly is.”- Rachel Hagenbaugh, Board Member & Executive Director of Mitchell Regional Habitat for Humanity.

In conjunction with Welcoming Week, the Coalition has launched a community experience survey to identify barriers that residents may face. The survey aims to gather insights on housing, employment, transportation, translation, and medical services. Participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of three $25 gift cards.
