The Mitchell City Council is expected to approve the appointment of Kevin Nelson as the city’s new Parks and Recreation Director on Monday night. Nelson comes to Mitchell from Austin, Minnesota and has Mitchell ties – his wife grew up in Mitchell. Mitchell Mayor Bob Everson says the city had nearly 30 applicants for the position from across the country. Nelson’s appointment is effective March 7th.
The council will also consider an ordinance to amend and readopt zoning regulations for medical cannabis establishments. Language regarding right-of-ways is expected to be removed from the regulation. Everson says the goal of the zoning ordinance is to spread the establishments out. The city will issue five licenses for dispensaries. Two companies have been approved. Three other companies passed background checks, but there were location issues under the initial zoning regulations.
