MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell City Council is juggling two big projects right now: dredging Lake Mitchell and renovating the Corn Palace. They’ve already set aside $21.5 million for the lake dredging, but now they’re eyeing a $12 million expansion of the Corn Palace. There’s no set timeline yet for the Corn Palace upgrades, but they reportedly hope to start construction in 2026, depending on how they secure the funding, which could involve loans or bonds. The planned renovations for the Corn Palace include updating the HVAC system, adding more seating, and other improvements. There’s also a $1.6 million proposal to update the plaza area, which could be funded through the city’s entertainment tax account. The council plans to discuss the project more at their meeting on February 18th
