The Mitchell City Council meets this evening at 6 PM at City Hall in downtown Mitchell. The council will decide whether to put the Lake Mitchell project to a public vote. Specifically, voters would decide whether to approve a $25 million loan to clean the algae-ridden lake.  At its last meeting, the council deadlocked 4-4 on whether to approve the loan for the project.  Normally, Mitchell Mayor Bob Everson would cast any tie-breaking vote.  However, he is not allowed to vote on fiscal items.  If the council approves the public vote, an election would likely be held in September.

Also tonight, new Mitchell City Council members will be sworn into office.  Mike Bathke won the Ward 3 seat in the June election.  He will replace Dan Allen, who did not run for re-election.  Tim Goldammer ran unopposed in Ward 1.  He replaces Steve Rice, who also did not run again.  Incumbent Susan Tjarks won re-election, and incumbent John Doescher ran unopposed.

Tonight’s Mitchell City Council meeting is open to the public. It’s also streamed online and televised locally. The agenda can be found here: https://mitchellsd.portal.civicclerk.com/event/1119/files.
