MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell City Council meets today to sort out funding for local non-profits. The proposed 2026 budget includes about $457,000 in subsidies, trimmed down from more than $913,000 in requests. According to the Mitchell Republic, most groups saw a 30% cut from last year’s funding, while the Municipal Band and Exchange Club fireworks each got small boosts. Larger organizations like the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Mitchell Area Development Corporation make up the bulk of the subsidies, while smaller groups received partial funding. New applicants, including the Salvation Army, were denied. City leaders say subsidies need to benefit the whole community, and any increases would mean cuts elsewhere.
