MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell is no longer in the running for South Dakota’s next men’s prison. The state’s Prison Project Reset Task Force voted Tuesday to remove the city from consideration, citing strong public opposition and workforce concerns. A Department of Corrections survey showed just 7% of current prison staff would be willing to commute to Mitchell, compared to 77% for sites near Sioux Falls. Supporters of the Mitchell site, including the Mitchell Area Development Corporation, were prepared to testify but weren’t given the chance after the early vote. Mayor Jordan Hanson and MADC CEO Mike Lauritsen said the city remains focused on future growth, despite the decision. With Mitchell and Worthing now off the table, all remaining prison site options are located in the Sioux Falls area, and officials say the Sweetman property is the leading candidate.
