Mitchell Fire and EMS responded to 517 E. 2nd Ave. at 9:15 PM on 4/5/2025 for reports of a structure fire. Engine 3 arrived on scene and encountered heavy fire coming from the South side of the structure. A second alarm was immediately called as well as to have additional firefighters and apparatus respond. Firefighters extinguished the exterior fire on the South side of the structure while other firefighters made entry to conduct a primary search. Heavy fire conditions were found in the kitchen. The fire was extinguished at 9:37 PM and crews began to search for potential areas that could be a point of reignition. Firefighters removed one dog from the residence. Unfortunately, that dog was deceased. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Ethan Fire Department responded for mutual aid. Mitchell Police Department, Davison County Sheriffs Department, and the American Red Cross also responded. The origin of the fire appeared to be in the kitchen, and the investigation is still ongoing. The Mitchell Police Department, South Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are also assisting with the investigation.
