The Mitchell Food Pantry’s Annual Turkey Giveaway will be held again this year. The event was discussed at last Monday’s Mitchell City Council meeting. The food pantry sought a special event permit for the giveaway which would close the TMA parking lot at 800 North Main and Lawler Street from 7th to 9th Avenue during the event. However, Mitchell Police Chief Mike Koster sought a change in location for the giveaway due to its growth in size over the years.  He proposed Cadwell Park.  He said a similar event earlier this year held downtown by the Mitchell Food Pantry caused traffic issues.  He said he was also concerned that there is a Dakota Wesleyan basketball game scheduled at the Corn Palace on the afternoon of the giveaway.

Karen Pooley, who is one of the organizers of the giveaway, requested that the location remain the same, citing the extra work it would take in hauling the food to Cadwell Park.

The council approved the special event permit at its original location with the requested road and parking lot closures along with the Disco Seed parking lot being closed. The turkey giveaway is scheduled for 11 AM on Saturday, November 18th at the city parking lot between TMA and Graham Tire. A turkey, ½ gallon of milk, and a box of groceries will be given away to the first 175 people. There is a limit of one meal per household.
