The Mitchell baseball team settled for a split of two games at Yankton Friday in their last road trip of the regular season.
The Kernels took a 3-1 lead in game one before fielding mistakes led to a Yankton rally as Mitchell fell 5-3. Parker Bollinger had an RBI single, while Dylan Soulek stole home on a double steal to help the Kernels build their lead in the fifth inning before Yankton rallied back with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take game one.
Mitchell responded in the second game with a strong pitching performance by Jonah Schmidt, who tossed a one-hit shutout gem in a 5-0 win. Schmidt had a no-hitter broken up in the sixth inning on a single by Jace McCorkell with one out. The Kernels were led offensively by Dylan Soulek, going 3-4 with 2 RBIs, and Schmidt’s 2-4, while Jace Larson and Jacob Schumacher each had RBIs.
Mitchell wraps up the regular season Sunday when they meet Rapid City Stevens for two games at Cadwell Park at 1pm.
