Mitchell High School and the Mitchell Athletic Booster Club announced the MHS Hall of Fame Class of 2021. The 2021 inductees are Beth (Ommen) Irish ’93, Dr. Lucio Margallo and Tim (Smith) Grivna.

An open house will be held at The Depot on Friday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 p.m. with a program being held at 7 p.m. Inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the Kernel Bowl football game on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Here is a little bit more about the MHS Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

Beth (Ommen) Irish was a 3-sport letterwinner in basketball, volleyball and track. She was a key component of the girls basketball team’s impressive 4 year run from 1989 to 1992 under Coach Gary Munsen. During that span the Kernels were State AA Champions in 1990 and 1992 while finishing as Runners-Up in 1991 and receiving 4th place in 1989. She was named to the Eastern South Dakota All Conference team all 4 years and selected to the Class AA First Team All-State and Class AA All-Tournament team her junior and senior seasons. As a senior she was a SD Miss Basketball and SD Player of the Year Finalist. Following high school Beth received a full scholarship to play basketball at South Dakota State University where she earned All-NCC Academic All-Conference honors her senior season. She currently holds the SDSU school record for most assists in a game (13) and most assists per game in a season (6.25) while also being in the top 10 for assists in a season, career assists, career assists per game and career steals per game.
Beth currently lives in Mantorville, MN, with her husband Cole, where she is a Speech-Language Pathologist at the Kasson-Mantorville Elementary School. They have 3 children, Caitlin, Avery and Brooks.

 

Dr. Lucio Margallo has been an ever present face on the sidelines of Mitchell Kernel athletics since beginning his work as team physician in 1983. After completing his undergrad and internship in his native Philippines, Dr. Margallo came to the United States in 1973, completing his residency at the University of South Dakota in 1980. Dr. Margallo has been and continues to be very active in a number of organizations currently serving as the President Elect of the South Dakota State Medical Association and serving on the Board of Directors. He is a past president of the Mitchell Quarterback Club and is a long-time member of the Mitchell Athletic Booster Club. Dr. Margallo has been recognized with numerous awards including Distinguished Service Awards for both the SDSMA and Mitchell High School.
Dr. Margallo currently works as an Internal Medicine with Avera Medical Group in Mitchell. He is married to Claudette and has 4 adult children Farrah, Justin, Chris and Jonelle.

 

No matter where they were, Mitchell Kernel fans always felt like they were at games in person when listening to Tim (Smith) Grivna call games on the radio. A native of Minneapolis, MN and a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Tim Smith was the play-by-play voice of Mitchell Kernel football and basketball from 1973 to 2021 calling over 450 football games and nearly 1,000 basketball games during that span. Tim was named South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year four times, South Dakota High School Coaches Association Broadcaster of the year and received the SDHSAA Distinguished Service Award in 2000. He is a past president of the Mitchell Quarterback Club and was awarded the Eastern South Dakota Conference Award of Merit in 2021, the conference’s highest honor. Tim currently lives in Mitchell with his wife Sandi and has 5 adult children Shane, Todd, Troy, Amber and Scott.
