Mitchell Main Street informational meeting to be held on Tuesday

MITCHELL, S.D. — Mitchell Main Street & Beyond, along with the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Mitchell, will host a Mitchell Main Street Informational Meeting on Tuesday, November 14th starting at 5:30 pm. This meeting will take place at the Western Building (223 N Main St.) and tours will be offered to show improvements on the structure.

Ashley Endres with Mitchell Main Street and Beyond and Joe Schroeder with the City of Mitchell will speak on the Main Street Business Improvement District (BID) and the new upcoming streetscape projects.

“We are excited for the positive momentum to continue to see downtown businesses utilize BID funds for building repairs as well as the streetscape enhancements that are proposed for the upcoming intersections,” said Endres, Director of Mitchell Main Street and Beyond.

Elizabeth Luczak with Mitchell Main Street and Beyond along with a representative from the Mitchell Area Council of the Arts will speak on the next Main Street Window Art Project. The theme for this year’s Window Art Contest is “Literary References” and entry forms will be made available Wednesday, November 15th.

Anyone is welcome to attend this meeting to learn more about Mitchell’s Main Street and all the upcoming projects.

Huron Contractor Sentenced for Defrauding Customers

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that Huron contractor Julio Morales-Ortiz has been sentenced for defrauding seven customers out of more than $36,000. Morales-Ortiz pleaded guilty in Beadle County Circuit Court to theft by deception, receiving a suspended 10-year prison sentence, probation, and jail time.

South Dakota lawmakers will meet in a special session to decide on a proposed $650 million men’s penitentiary in Sioux Falls, but members of the Freedom Caucus remain opposed. Mitchell Plans Second Fire Station to Speed Up Response Times

Mitchell city officials are proposing a $2.5 million fire station on the north side of town to improve emergency response times and reduce insurance costs for residents. The station would be built near the old water treatment plant on Highway 37, with design work beginning in 2026 and an opening planned for 2027. City leaders say the new location will allow firefighters to reach the north side more quickly, while housing four firefighters who will share equipment with the current Public Safety building.
