MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell’s mayor is pulling his support for a proposed state prison near town, saying it’s just not the right fit for the community. In a letter, Mayor Jordan Hanson now says he won’t back the project, after hearing from residents who are overwhelmingly against it. He admits his early support focused too much on possible economic benefits and not enough on how it could affect families and the town’s future. Hanson says only about 15 to 20 percent of people he’s talked to are in favor of the prison, and that it’s clear most folks just don’t want it. Dozens showed up at a county meeting this week to speak out. The mayor says he’s focused on growing Mitchell in a way people actually support like new housing, jobs, and community projects.
