Lainee Forst and Floyd Korzan were selected as the KMIT Student-Athlete Award recipients for 2025.
Mitchell hosted their Mitchell Athletic Booster Club Athletic Awards Banquet on Wednesday night in Mitchell in the World’s Only Corn Palace. Numerous awards, scholarships and prizes were given out during the event. One of those being the KMIT Student-Athlete Award for 2025.
About the Winners
Forst has been a standout gymnast and track & field athlete for years and has been on both varsity teams since she was in eighth grade. Along with various team accomplishments over the years, Forst excelled individually as well. Most notably, for gymnastics she earned All-American status on beam in 2024 and broke the school record with a 151.444 at the State meet. This year she garnished 10th place in State floor and earned National High School Association Elite All-American status in floor. Notably in track, she was a 7x ESD medalist, 5x State medalist, and is part of the team that is now ranked second all-time for Mitchell in the 4x400m. Forst also excelled in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization. She was a multi-time State Qualifier, National Qualifier & one-time State Champion in extemporaneous speaking and more. As well as an individual very involved in the community through FFA, pen-pals, church programs and more with more than 200 hours of community service and activities.
Korzan excelled in both cross country and track & field at the varsity level since his sophomore year. Along with team accomplishments, Korzan made his mark individually as well. Most notably he was an all-conference and all-state track & fielder all three varsity seasons and owns the school record in distance medley. He improved his individual running times more than any other team member, including his 800m going from a 2:50 time to a 2:04. Was also an all-conference and all-state cross-country runner for two seasons. He also made his mark in the community. He was the co-creator of the chess club, involved in church programs for various years, mentored younger students in different programs, spent two weeks helping build a fence for his neighbor and more.
The Award
This award in previous years was given to just one male or female athlete, but it was decided this year to award both a male and female. It is an annual award half based on athletic accomplishments and the other half on leadership and participation in other school and community activities. We also transitioned to a physical award instead of engraved watches, which were given in the past. This year’s award was presented by the “Voice of the Kernels” and On-Air Personality at KMIT, Drew Ivery.
