MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell police are investigating thefts from two BankWest ATM locations that resulted in an estimated $80,000 taken, authorities said.
The thefts occurred late Friday, Feb. 13, into the morning of Saturday, Feb. 14, according to information provided by the Mitchell Police Department. Sgt. McGlaughlin said the suspect used a method known as “jackpotting” to access the machines.
“Jackpotting” is a type of ATM attack in which criminals manipulate an ATM to dispense cash, often by compromising the machine with malware or unauthorized hardware, according to federal authorities who have described similar cases nationwide.
Police said the total amount taken is still being determined, but early estimates put the loss at roughly $80,000 between the two locations.
Investigators believe the suspect approached the ATMs on foot and wore a mask and clothing that covered the body. No vehicle details were immediately available as investigators continue reviewing additional security footage, police said.
BankWest is headquartered in Pierre and operates branch locations across South Dakota, according to the bank.
