The $17 million bond issue which would add athletic facilities to the new Mitchell High School passed easily in Tuesday’s joint city/school election. The issue passed by nearly 82 percent, with 2,888 voting yes and 634 voting no. The new school is being built after the Mitchell School Board approved a base bid of just over $45 million earlier this year. That base bid did not include athletic facilities, as the price tag for the school increased due to inflation.
An initiated measure which would allow the city to sell 8 parcels of land around Lake Mitchell also passed. 1,641 voted yes, and 1,273 voted no for a 56% approval rate.
One Mitchell School Board seat was up for grabs on Tuesday. Challenger Deb Everson defeated incumbent Matthew Christiansen 1,713 to 1,629.
In the Mitchell City Council Ward 3 race, Mike Bathke received 317 votes. Kimberly Lofgren received 235 votes, and Jason Bates received 105 votes.
In Ward 4, incumbent Susan Tjarks held off a challenge from Don Everson. Tjarks picked up 505 votes, while Everson tallied 476 votes.
Davison County Auditor Sue Kiepke says 27 percent of school district voters voted, while 33 percent of city voters voted.
