MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Two major street reconstruction projects in Mitchell are expected to cost less than originally projected, with city officials citing strong contractor competition as a key reason for the savings.

The Fifth Avenue project, stretching from Burr Street to Foster Street, is expected to come in about 40% below initial estimates. The work includes upgrades to water, sewer and street infrastructure.

A separate reconstruction project on Sixth Avenue is also coming in under budget. Officials said some of that work will be completed by city crews, creating additional savings.

Construction on both projects is expected to begin after pre-construction meetings are completed. Both projects are scheduled to be finished this fall.

Drivers should plan for detours during construction, though officials said access to local streets and alleys will be maintained throughout the projects.

City leaders say the lower-than-expected costs will allow Mitchell to move forward with needed infrastructure improvements while reducing the overall financial impact of the work.
