MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell Technical College is proud to announce the completion of its 112th student-built home, now available for purchase. Built by students in Mitchell Tech’s construction-related programs, the home represents two years of hands-on training and collaboration across multiple skilled trades.
Located at 1527 E 8th St in the Ridgeview on Foster housing development in Mitchell, the newly constructed 1,845-square-foot home features three main-floor bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area. The master suite features spacious walk-in closets and an attached bathroom with direct access to the laundry room. The basement includes rough-ins for three additional bedrooms, a bathroom, and a family room, offering future expansion potential. The home also includes an attached three-car garage, quality cabinetry and finish work completed by students, a walk-in pantry, and energy efficient insulation, furnace, and ventilation systems.
Students from Mitchell Tech’s Architectural Design & Building Construction, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, and Heating & Cooling Technology programs contributed to every phase of the project — from footings and framing to carpentry and system installation. As a spec house, the project allows students creative flexibility while maintaining neutral finishes and broad market appeal.
“This home is more than just a house — it represents the skills, dedication, and career preparation of our students,” said Eric Schramm, Architectural Design and Building Construction Program Instructor. “Projects like this give students real industry experience while providing quality housing options for our community.”
Mitchell Tech’s student-built homes serve as capstone projects that prepare graduates to enter the workforce with practical, career-ready experience. By the time they complete the program, students have worked on every major component of residential construction, positioning them for leadership roles across the building industry.
“This project challenges students to meet professional standards at every stage of construction,” said Schramm. “From the footings to the final trim work, if something isn’t done right, it gets redone. That commitment to craftsmanship — combined with the opportunity to work on every phase of the build — ensures our graduates leave here confident, capable, and ready to step into the workforce.”
The home is now available for purchase by sealed bid, with a minimum bid of $385,000. For a showing, contact the Mitchell Tech Business Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday at (605) 995-7141.
