The 92 annual South Dakota State B Baseball Tournament kept rolling all weekend long at Cadwell Park. Friday’s action kicked off with area teams making their mark as Pony Hills League and Sunshine League team’s advance. The first game on Friday morning at Cadwell Park turned out to be with a great game with the Alexandria Angels winning by the final of 5 to 3. The Alexandria Angels starter Riley McSherry pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters, allowing six hits, two earned runs and six walks on 143 pitches.
The Alexandria Angels broke through in the sixth inning. The Angels loaded the bases, and with one out and Cole Wenande smacked a bases-clearing double into deep right field. The Cardinals scored two runs in the seventh, including a Chris Burke RBI single to left field. Flandreau evened the score in the eighth inning. After Tim Huber was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second, Rick Weber roped an RBI single to left field for a 3-3 tie. Alexandria will play Platte or the Dell Rapids Mudcats at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the second round.
That set the stage for the Alexandria Angels in the ninth. After Tucker Kingsbury was hit by a pitch, Jerrod Zens moved him over on a sacrifice bunt. After Cole Wenande was intentionally walked, the Angels Tyson Gau broke the tie with his two-run double. The Alexandria will play the Platte Killer Tomatoes at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the second round.
The second game of the day was a pitcher’s duel between the Platte Killer Tomatoes Grant Doom who was facing one of the top pitchers in the state in the Del Rapids Mudcats Kris Regas. The Platte Killers Tomatoes would win a squeaker scoring late in the 8th inning winning by the final of 1 to nothing. Kris Regas and Grant Doom had a combined 31 strikeouts in complete game battle and allowed only one run and a combined six hits. Platte advances to the second round in a rematch of their 10 to 8 District 5B semifinal victory with the Alexandria Angels on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday nights action at the 92 annual State B Tournament Amateur Baseball games included the third game of the day as you had the defending championship rematch featuring the Champs the Canova Gang vs the Lesterville Broncs and this game was all Canova Gang winning by the final of 11 to nothing. Not only was it a rematch between the two teams, but it was a rematch of pitchers as well, with Canova’s Trey Krier against Lesterville’s Alex Wagner.

Trey Krier tossed just two strikeouts but with the help of the defense behind him, was efficient in his seven-inning outing, throwing 56 strikes in 67 pitches. Justin Miller powered the Canova offense as Miller drove in five runs on three hits and had two walks, including a double and homer. Cole Gassman tallied two hits, a walk, and two RBIs. Riley Genzlinger and Tim Gassman each drove in a run on two hits, while Derek Miller drove in a run on a double in the win. Canova moves on to the second round of the State B amateur baseball tournament, and it will face the Northville vs. Kimball/White Lake winner on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
The fourth and final game of the day on Friday at the 92 annual State B Tournament Amateur Baseball games included the 3B District tournament winner from the Pony Hills League the Kimble White Lake Nationals vs the Northville Merchants and this game was all Kimble White Lake Nationals as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning by the final of 7 to 1. Caden Lenz powered the Kimble White Lake Nationals offense going 1 for 3 at the plate and scoring a run and driving in two runs. The Nationals Mitchell Price was stellar on the mound tossing a complete game three hitter only allowing one run while striking out 10. The Kimball/White Lake now face the defending champs the Canova Gang on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Winner/Colome Pheasants have now 17 straight games and have sights on the championship of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament after beating the Chamberlain Mallards in the first round of the tournament by the final of 8 to nothing. Winner/Colome’s Connor Hopkins struck out nine batters, allowed three hits, no runs and walked three batters in 7.1 innings for the win.
Reed Harter led Winner/Colome with three hits and drove in one run. Oscar Pravacek added three hits and an RBI. Chandler Bakley had two hits, while Dillon Lambley drove in 2 runs. Derek Graesser and Austin Calhoon added hits. The 21-1 Winner/Colome Pheasants face the Mount Vernon Mustangs on Wednesday night in round two of the tournament.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs are now the fourth team from the Sunshine League to advance to the 2nd round of the 92 annual State B Tournament. The Mustangs Bradley Dean put the Mustangs on his back going 3 for 4 at the plate as he scored the run that the put the Mustangs out in front for good winning by the final of 4 to 3 over the Salem Cubs. The Mustangs Luke Tesler was stella on the mound going eight Innings allowing 3 runs on 9 hits. The Mount Vernon Mustangs face the Winner Colome Pheasants on Wednesday night starting at 5:30 pm.
The second game of the day featured a great matchup between the Eastern Dakota League district champion Milbank Fire Chiefs vs the upstart Hartford Humbolt Gamecocks and it would be all Fire Chiefs in this one as they had the bats rolling in the opening round of the State B tournament on its way to a 5-2 victory. The Fire Chiefs third baseman Brady Krause drove in the first two runs of the game for Milbank with an RBI-single in the opening frame followed by an RBI-sac fly in the third, when the Gamecocks starting pitcher Cole Barthel exited the game. Milbank advances to the second round where it will face Dell Rapids PBR on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The first game of the day on Saturday was another powerful pitching performance as the Del Rapids PBR’s Riley Hoffman carried them to victory over the Elkton Snappers winning 5 to 3. Hoffman was masterful in his eight innings of work allowing 3 runs on seven hits while striking out eleven. Del Rapids offense was powered by Weston Hansen who went 2 for four at the plate and drove in two runs. Del Rapids PBR advances to the second round where it will face Millbank Fire Chiefs on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Four Corners knocked off Crofton by the final off 13 to 10 in a high scoring affair as the teams went scoreless through the first two innings. But it got wild in the third inning. Four Corners plated eight runs on nine hits for an 8-0 lead. Crofton responded with a 10-run bottom half, highlighted by a James Kaiser grand slam over the 340-foot left field fence.
Garrett Stout hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, putting Four Corners ahead 11-10. In the ninth inning, Hand smacked a two-run double into right field and gave Four Corners a pair of insurance runs. Four Corners is into the second round, where it will face Garretson at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Garretson knocked out Corsica winning by the final of 8 to 1 thanks to their pitcher on the mound in former Wichita State University pitcher Aaron LaBrie, who gave up just one run on three hits while striking out 10 batters in the win. Garretson moves on to play another Four Corners in the second round on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Larchwood pounded 19 hits as it defeated Wessington Springs in the second round of the State B tournament Sunday. Josh Van Beek batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Keaton Grevengoed tallied three hits and two RBIs, while Micah Linn, Cody Groskruetz, Jacob Kindhart, Brent Ripperda, and Gavin Lorenzen each tallied two hits, combining for 10 RBIs
Korey McKenney took the victory on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings. The Larchwood Diamonds plays the Dimock/Emery Raptors in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The Dimock Emery Raptors won in dramatic fashion as they were down by 5 runs to the Castlewood Ravens heading into the bottom of the ninth as Jason Schmidt drove in two runs then two more runs scored on an error and the Raptors Sam Pischke drove in the winning run as the Raptors pull off the come from behind victory winning by the final of 8 to 7.
For the Raptors, Sam Pischke batted 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, Colton Plagmann drove in a run on a hit and a walk, Jason Schmidt drove in two runs on a hit and a walk, while Johnson drove in two runs on two hits.
Castlewood’s Alex Gauer drove in two runs on two hits and a walk, Steiger tallied three hits and a walk, Peyton Garbers (Clark pick-up player) drove in a run on two walks, Nate Phinney had an RBI, Blayne Schliesman had two hits, while Kegan Tvedt drove in a run on a single in the loss as well.
Dimock/Emery will have to recuperate and reset following Sunday’s emotional and dramatic victory, as they move on to the quarterfinals to take on the Larchwood Diamonds on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The best men and women golfers in South Dakota were in Rapid City this past weekend at beautiful Meadowbrook Golf Course for the 2024 SDGA Amateur Championship as Kevin Gillick of Rapid City is the Men’s Champion and Reese Jansa of Sioux Falls is the Women’s Championship. It is the first SDGA Championship for Kevin and the 11th for Reese Jansa.
Mitchell’s Allison Meyerinks finished third at +14 for the Championship and Mitchell’ Maddie Childs finished 6th and DWU womens golfer Ashton Austreim finished 11th.
The DWU men’s Elite Basketball Camp is on Saturday August 17TH and are for boys’ basketball players who will learn basic to advanced technique that feature progressive drills that will improve an individual’s game so they will be more skilled at the high school level. The camp instructors are the DWU men’s basketball coaches and players. The boys’ basketball camps are designed for instruction and coaching in and will be given in small groups to help campers master the skills that are covered. The DWU boys’ basketball camps are for boys entering the 9th grade through 12th grade. Check-in time is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday’s schedule is 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The DWU boys’ elite basketball camp is $40 per camper. The DWU basketball camps are being taught at the Avera Sports Complex.
