The Mitchell Kernel football team kicked off their 2024 Class 11 AA football season on Friday night at Joe Quintal Field in dramatic fashion hosting the visiting Douglas Patriots. The Mitchell Kernel football team decided to take the ball on the first possession and never looked back. The Kernels marched down the field on their opening possession and in a very impressive drive and took the ball 91 yards in a 10-play time consuming possession and scored from one yard out on a Parker Denne touchdown plunge and from that point forward it was all Kernels the rest of the evening.

On the next possession Mitchells quarterback Tristan Jellis found wide out Brayden Reindl on a 19-yard touchdown strike, and it was 14 nothing Kernels. Because the Kernels defense forced the Patriots offense to go three and out three consecutive times the Kernels Parker Denne may them pay on a 55-yard touchdown punt return and quickly it was 21 to nothing Kernels. Then back-to-back to back touchdown passes from Jellis to Denne made it 41 to 7 at halftime.

The Kernel defense was the story in the second half holding the Patriots to one score and the Kernels would go on and win this game by the final of 51 to 13. The Kernels offense piled up 512 total yards while quarterback Tristan Jellis went 19 for 25 through the air and finished with four touchdown passes and passed for 400 yards. The Kernels running back Parker Denne finished with 5 total touchdowns and 265 receiving yards. The Kernels other running back Hudson Borgan shinned as well as he finished with 111 receiving yards on seven catches and a receiving touchdown. The Kernels take their powerful offense on the road next Friday battling the 1-0 Brookings Bobcats at 7 pm.

The Mitchell Kernels Volleyball team kicked off their 2024 season at home on Friday night at Mitchell HS’s main gym in a very impressive performance beating the visiting Sturgis Scoopers volleyball team winning in straight sets 3 to nothing to win the match. The set scores for the Mitchell Kernels were 25-11, 29-27 and 25-18. The Mitchell Kernels volleyball team is now 1-0 to start the season and take the court next on Thursday September 6TH at SF Washington starting at 7 pm.

The Mitchell Kernels girl’s tennis team is on a roll to start the 2024 season. They won easily in a road dual in on Friday in Rapid City beating Rapid City Christian by the final of 9 to 0. Starting in-flight singles # 1 Megan Mastel won her first match 10 to 7 then in-flight singles #2 Carson Weich was a big winner 10 to 7. The Kernels girls Katie Morgan then followed suit winning by the final of 10 to 5 in her flight # 3 and Elly Clement won her flight # 4 10 to 7 and winning flight singles # 5 was Matteah Graves winning by the final of 10 to nothing and Mia Larson won her flight # six 10 to 1.

The Kernel girls won three straight flights in doubles play over the Vermillion as winning the 1st flight was Megan Mastel and Carson Weich 10 to 7, then Matteah Graves and Elly Clement won flight # two 10-6, Then Katie Morgan and Mia Larson won 10 to 2. The Mitchell Kernels Tennis team is now 8-0 to start the season and 3-0 in ESD Conference play. The Kernel girls’ next match is on the road vs Rapid City Stevens.

The DWU Tigers Volleyball team opened the Siouxland Invite in Sioux City Iowa on Friday first vs St Ambrose then they battled Dickinson State. It was all Lady Tigers on Friday taking the first match in four sets vs St Ambrose after losing the first set 15-25, then winning 3 straight sets by the final of 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 to close out the sets and win the match. The DWU Tiger then out lasted Dickinson State in a five-set thriller winning 25-22, in the first set then losing the next two sets 25-20, 25-20, only to come from behind in dramatic fashion winning two sets in a row 25-11, and 15-13 to close out the match for the win.

The Tigers have now won three matches in a row and are now 3-4 on the season. The DWU Tigers Volleyball team continued their hot play on Saturday dominating Mayville State and winning the match three sets to one. The set wins were 28-26, 25-12, they dropped the 3rd set 25-21 but rallied to take the fourth set and the match winning 25-15. The 2nd match on Saturday was won by Benedictine as they won the match 3 sets to one. The DWU Tigers Volleyball team had a great showing in the Siouxland Invite in Sioux City Iowa on Friday and Saturday going 3 and 1 for the tournament.

The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened their 2024 season at the University of Wisconsin River Fall Invite and took home the 3rd place team prize. The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened the event on Friday and continued the event on Saturday. The Tigers Allison Meyerink had a great Invite as she tied for 7th with rounds of 80, and 82 for both days.

The Lady Tigers placed four in the top twenty as Sara Sudenga took tied for 11th after carding an 84, and 83 for two rounds. Ashton Austreim carded an 85, 85, for two rounds and tied for 16th. Kaylee Johnson tied for 20th with her two rounds at 88 and 84. The Lady Tigers Kelsey Morrison finished tied for 30th with a 90 and 87 for two rounds. The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team had a great showing kicking off their 2024 season at the University of Wisconsin River Fall Invite and took home the 3rd place team prize.

The DWU Tigers Womens Soccer team played an exhibition match against the University of Minnesota-Crookston on Spetember 1, 2024. The final score was 1-1. The lone score comes from #3 Deandra Johnson with a solid high kick resulting in a score for the women Tiger’s. Johnson scored her goal with 8 minutes left in the 2nd half.

The Tigers pack their bags and hit the road to play in another exhibition match against Martin Luther College. The game is set for September 4th at 4:30p.m 

The Mitchell Kernels teams in action today include Monday September 2nd Soccer boys varsity vs Groton Area@ Groton Area HS 1 pm. Soccer girl’s varsity vs Groton @ Groton Area HS 3 pm. Football game JV Varsity vs Brookings @ Joe Quintal Field 4:15 pm.

The Tampa Bay Rays host the Minnesota Twins on Monday to begin a four-game series. Tampa Bay has a 67-69 record overall and a 35-36 record at home. The Rays have the ninth-ranked team on-base percentage in the AL at .306. Minnesota is 74-62 overall and 35-32 on the road. The Twins have a 28-9 record in games when they did not give up a home run. The teams meet Monday for the fourth time this season.
