The Mitchell Kernel football team kicked off their 2024 Class 11 AA football road schedule on Friday night at Dana J Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings vs the Brookings Bobcats. The Mitchell Kernel football team decided to take the ball on the first possession and the Brookings Bobcats defense was up to the task by not allowing a Kernels first down. The Kernels defense kept them in the game early holding Brookings in check and forcing a turnover on their first two drives.

Mitchells Hudson Borgan picked off a Gavin Anderson throw and then on the next possession Mitchells linebacker Kellan Odell recovered a fumble.  The Brookings Bobcats found their ground game in the first half as they piled up 218 yards on 19 attempts. The Bobcats Gavin Anderson found paydirt for the first score of the game on a quarterback draw scoring from four yards out for a 7 to nothing lead. The Bobcats scored again on a running back draw from 41 yards out as Will Conrad scored his first of three rushing touchdowns.

The first half would end with the Bobcats leading 14 to nothing. It would be all Bobcats in the second half as the Bobcats running back Will Conrad would score two more rushing touchdowns first a 12-yard scamper then on a 11-yard runs as the Bobcats would go on and win the game by the final of 34 to nothing. The Bobcats running back Will Conrad had a career night rushing for 286 yards on 27 carries. The Mitchell Kernels were held to only 145 total yards. The 1-1 Mitchell Kernels suffered their first loss of the season and look to rebound on Saturday night as the Kernels host the Spearfish Spartans in the Kernel Bowl starting at 7 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

The Dakota Wesleyan Tiger were looking for their first win of the season after losing the season opener last week in Madison vs Dakota State by the final of 34 to 3.  The Tigers football team was hosting their rivals in the Mount Marty Lancers in the Dakota Railroad Rivalry game at Joe Quintal Field.

The Mount Marty Lancers would score first on a touchdown pass and take an early 7 to nothing lead. The Tigers offense would tie the game at 7-7 scoring on a great touchdown pass from the Tigers quarterback Carter Robinson would throw his first touchdown pass of the season to Preston Nedved from 13 yards out and the Tigers defense played well which led to the Tigers kicker Jaxon Patrick kicking a 28-yard field goal giving the Tigers a 10 to 7 halftime lead.

The Tigers would score first in the second half on a Kobe Kayser one yard touchdown run giving them a 17 to 7 lead. The Lancers would score late on a 19-yard touchdown run to pull within three points of the lead. The Tigers offense would fumble to ball trying to run out the clock to win the game and that would lead to a chip shot Mount Marty field goal to send the game into overtime. On the first possession of overtime the Lancers would score on a touchdown run giving them a 24 to 17 overtime lead. The Tigers offense would come up short on 4 and 1 in overtime and lose the game by the final of 24 to 17. The Tigers are now 0-2 on the season and host the Concordia Bulldogs at home Saturday starting at 2:30 p.

Class 9AA No. 1 Parkston Trojans won easily over Kimble White Lake winning by the final of 26 to 0 as Parkston racked up over 300 rushing yards as the Trojans blanked Kimball/White Lake during Friday’s football action. Running backs Kolter Kramer and Kaden Holzbauer led the charge combining for 223 yards on 19 carries, including a touchdown run by Kramer. Carter Sommer finished 4-for-6 passing with 102 yards and two passing touchdowns.

Kolter Kramer reeled in a 19-yard touchdown, while Holzbauer caught a 5-yard touchdown as well. Mason Jervik and Gage Jodozi each caught one pass, combining for 78 yards. KWL’s Iden Myers ran 20 times for 92 yards, Park Sinclair and Keaton Christensen each had 28 passing yards, while Dayn Goodman caught three passes for 53 yards in the loss.

Class 9B No. 1 Avon Pirates remained undefeated crushing Burke 60 to 7 behind another strong game from running back Aziah Meyer. Aziah Meyer rushed for 105 yards on nine carries and scored three rushing touchdowns, including a 58-yard touchdown run. Grayson Ratzlaff rushed for 55 yards and scored on a kickoff return. Landon Mudder scored two rushing touchdowns, while he returned an interception for a score. Trent Soukup added a rushing touchdown. Burke’s Jayder Schonebaum threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Bartling in the loss.

The Hanson Beavers picked up their first win of the season over De Smet winning 25 to 8 as Hansons Sutton Dewald rushed for 128 yards as Hanson defeated De Smet in Friday high school football action. Sutton Dewald carried the ball 14 times and scored a touchdown. Stetson Riggs had a rushing touchdown, while Esten Schlimgen threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Weston Kayser. Nate Wilber added a 25-yard field goal. Kayser rushed for 70 yards on 11 carries. Schlimgen completed 8-for-13 passes for 147 yards. Dewald posted nine tackles and Radek Jarding had a sack. De Smet’s Ganon Henrich rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown in the loss.

The DWU Tigers women’s golf team is in action next Tuesday competing at the Sand Creek intercollegiate Tournament starting at 9 am. DWU Tigers Volleyball team hits the court next Tuesday in their 2024 home opener vs the visiting Dakota State Trojans starting at 7 pm.

The Mitchell Kernels girls’ varsity tennis team is on a roll to start the 2024 season. They won easily in a home dual at Hitchcock Park beating Pierre by the final of 9 to 0. Leading off in-flight singles # 1 was Megan Mastel who won her first match 10-4, then in-flight singles #2 Carson Weich was a big winner 10-2. The Kernels girls Katie Morgan then followed suit winning by the final of 10-5 in her flight # 3 and Elly Clement won her flight # 4 10-2.

The Kernel girls also won flight singles # 5 as Matteah Graves won by the final of 10-5 and Mia Larson won her flight # six 10-1. The Kernel girls won three straight flights in doubles play over Pierre as winning the 1st flight was Megan Mastel and Carson Weich 10-5, then Matteah Graves and Elly Clement won flight # two 10-0, Then Katie Morgan and Mia Larson won flight doubles # 3 10-0.

The Kernel girls’ varsity tennis team won in straight sets in the second match of the day over the Spearfish Spartans girls varsity tennis team in winning 9 to nothing. The Mitchell Kernels Tennis team is now 10-1 to start the season in duals play and is 3-0 in ESD Conference play. The Kernel girls’ next match is today in a varsity dual vs SF Roosevelt starting at 4 p.m.

The Minnesota Twins host the Los Angeles Angels Monday at 6:40 p.m. CDT as it will be the Angels: Reid Detmers (3-6, 5.87 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 80 strikeouts); Twins: David Festa (2-5, 4.75 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 58 strikeouts) The Minnesota Twins look to end a three-game skid when they play the Los Angeles Angels.

Minnesota has a 39-30 record at home and a 76-67 record overall. The Twins have hit 170 total home runs to rank fifth in the AL. Los Angeles is 29-42 in road games and 59-84 overall. The Angels have gone 30-74 in games when they have allowed a home run. The teams meet Monday for the fourth time this season.
