SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Sierra Mitchell hit back-to-back 3-pointers late on Saturday in the GPAC season opener for No. 6 Morningside (2-2, 1-0 GPAC) to give the Mustangs a 66-60 lead for good. Morningside went on to defeat DWU (3-1, 0-1 GPAC) by a final of 73-63.
DWU senior point guard Kaylee Kirk scored a game-high 15 points and ripped down four offensive rebounds and dished out six assists. Isabel Ihnen scored a season-high 11, and Matti Reiner added 10.
Five Morningside players reached double digits in scoring in Mitchell (14), Sophia Peppers (14), McKenna Sims (11), Chloe Lofstrom (11) and Alexis Spier (10).
There were five lead changes and nine ties in the back-and-forth matchup. DWU next faces Jamestown on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. Coverage on KMIT 105.9 FM will begin at 5:40 p.m.
