MITCHELL S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The South Department of Health has announced that mosquito suppression grants are now available in amounts ranging from $500 to $20,000 to cities, counties and tribes. The grants must be used for mosquito control. The purpose is to kill mosquitoes in order to limit the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV).
South Dakota’s first case of WNV was reported in 2001. Since then, 2,843 cases of WNV have been identified, resulting in 53 deaths.
There is $500,000 in grant funds available. The decision to award a grant, and how much it will be, is based on the population of the applying jurisdiction and how many cases of WNV that jurisdiction had in 2023.
All applications are due by June 1, 2024, and awards will be announced beginning on July 1, 2024.
