MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) At a recent Mitchell City Council meeting, retired businessman Roger Musick pushed back on the city’s focus on tourism, saying it’s time to shift attention toward what really fuels the local economy, jobs. Musick argued that regional shoppers and essential services like healthcare and big box retail have a much bigger impact than tourists stopping by the Corn Palace. He shared data showing only a small bump in summer spending and pointed to $56 million in wage growth over the past three years in sectors like construction, healthcare, and professional services. According to Musick, the city should invest more in creating high-paying jobs that keep young families in Mitchell. He said, quote, “Tourism might be the front door, but jobs are what keep people here.” For more Government stories from MitchellNow.com, Click Here.
