PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Plans for a new men’s penitentiary between Harrisburg and Canton moved forward in Pierre this week, though not with all the necessary funding in place. Area residents voiced opposition to the location during a state House committee debate on the proposed $825 million facility. Representative Tim Reisch of Howard, a former Corrections Secretary, supported the proposal, urging lawmakers to move forward and secure the price. Canton Representative Karla Lems opposed the plan and called for a pause in the process. The committee ultimately voted to send the proposal to the House Appropriations Committee without a recommendation, leaving the bill, and the debate, still open.
