Governor Kristi Noem says she would call lawmakers back to Pierre for a special session if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Her Twitter announcement stems from Politico report which says a draft opinion circulated among Supreme Court justices suggests that a majority support overturning the 1973 ruling which legalizes abortion. Noem’s announcement says that if the report is true, she would immediately call for a special session to save lives and guarantee that every unborn child has a right to life in South Dakota. Noem introduced what was called a “heartbeat bill” during this year’s legislative session which would prohibit abortions after the detection of a heartbeat. Controversy surrounded the bill after it was not introduced in either legislative chamber.
