LINCOLN COUNTY, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A grassroots group spoke out after a major legal defeat in its effort to stop a new men’s state prison in rural Lincoln County. The South Dakota Supreme Court ruled against Neighbors Opposing Prison Expansion, or NOPE, ending the group’s nearly two-year legal challenge. While NOPE leaders said they were disappointed, they said they acknowledge and respect the court’s decision. They noted that the long fight sparked a broader statewide conversation about government accountability and taxpayer transparency. NOPE said it would remain active and will hold a public meeting today to discuss the next steps and respond to recent decisions by the state’s Project Prison Reset task force.
