MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — State prison officials have placed 37-year-old Latoya Shangreaux on escape status after she failed to return to the Pierre Minimum Center from her work release job overnight, according to the South Dakota Department of Corrections.

Shangreaux is described as a Native American female standing 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 205 pounds. She has brown hair, brown eyes, and visible tattoos on her neck.

She is serving sentences out of Minnehaha County for possession of a controlled substance and failure to appear.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Shangreaux’s whereabouts to contact law enforcement immediately.

Under South Dakota law, failure to return to custody following an assignment constitutes second-degree escape — a Class 5 felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Anyone found concealing an escaped prisoner can also face the same felony charge.
