SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A few weeks ago, South Dakota’s Congressional delegation (Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds as well as Congressman Dusty Johnson) sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis Dejoy protesting the closure of the postal handling facilities in Sioux Falls and Huron.
It has been announced that the United States Postal Service has announced it will keep the Sioux Falls facility open as a Local Processing Center and invest $12.75 million into the facility. The American Postal Workers Union had also expressed alarm over the projected closure citing concerns for its members, the timeliness of the mail and the impact in particular on rural delivery service.
The USPS will invest $6.5 million into the Sioux Falls facility for modernization efforts and deferred maintenance such as workplace amenities for employees. Additionally, $1.25 million will be made to locate a Single Induction Package Sorter into the facility to improve delivery services. Another $5 million will be invested in new battery electric delivery vehicles.
There is still no word on the fate of the Huron postal processing facility.
