MITCHELL, S.D.  (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota Department of Public Safety just released a report that shows there was a slight increase in road fatalities in 2024. According to the report, there were 146 deaths in 2024, up six from 2023. Of those fatalities, 36 people were reportedly wearing seat belts, while 53 were not. Alcohol played a role in 47 deaths, and speed was a factor in 32. The Department of Public Safety also points out that fatalities are considered “crash-related” if they happen within 30 days of an accident. Since some investigations take time, these numbers are still preliminary and could change.
