WATERTOWN, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Sam Mooney is taking a unique step to raise awareness and funds for Watertown Cares, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the emergency housing needs in the Watertown area.  Mooney’s commitment to helping the homeless population is set to take center stage this December…

With a grant from the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA), funding was received to purchase the 612 Flats and convert it into emergency housing for those in our community experiencing homelessness.

Despite its efforts, the need for emergency housing in Watertown remains high and continues to grow with a waiting list of nearly 30 families, including around 20 children, seeking shelter/  This is not a traditional night-by-night homeless shelter. It is temporary emergency housing. Clients will typically stay 30-90 days before finding permanent housing with the assistance of a case manager.

To draw necessary attention to this pressing issue, Mooney will camp in a tent at Dakotaland Federal Credit Union’s parking lot starting at 7:00 AM on Monday, December 2, 2024…

Even if a large donor or the goal is reached early, Mooney says he is committed to being in and around that tent for 36 hours.  Mooney, a board member of Watertown Cares, also mentioned that he will provide video updates throughout his stay, which will be posted on the Watertown Cares Facebook page.
