MITCHELL, S.D. (Mitchell Now)— The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) announced the start of its sixth annual snowplow naming contest, which began November 3 and runs through December 12, 2025. The program encourages public participation in winter preparedness by allowing South Dakotans to submit original names for the plows that operate throughout the state.

Residents of Mitchell and Davison County are encouraged to participate, as several snowplows in this region will receive new names for the upcoming winter season. Each district across the state will select winning entries based on creativity, originality, and local relevance.

The initiative began in 2020 as a way to engage communities and promote safe winter driving awareness. The SDDOT uses the program to remind motorists of plow-safety practices, including keeping a safe distance and avoiding passing snowplows during active operations.

Winners will be announced later in December, and the newly named plows will be displayed on the SDDOT’s official “Snowplow Map,” viewable online throughout the winter.
