SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Sioux Falls Police have a suspect in custody for a homicide that took place after the victim was accused of sexually assaulting a child.

Dylan Tyler Farmer, 30, of Sioux Falls is facing charges of First and Second Degree Murder for killing Casey Shawn Edward Shaffer, 30, of Sioux Falls on September 7.

The incident occurred at about 3:41 a.m. at an apartment located at 808 West Bailey Street in Sioux Falls. A woman had made a call to police to remove an individual from her apartment.

The mother claimed she confronted Shaffer, who had been staying in the apartment for two days, by text message for sexually assaulting her 6-year-old son. He had denied it. Police found Shaffer on the living room floor, dead from apparent gunshot wounds from a small caliber handgun.

Dylan Farmer turned himself in and confessed to the murder earlier in the day.  However, at that time the Sioux Falls Police had no report of a crime, no body or any other evidence and Farmer was vague on the details.  He was released as a crank, perhaps a publicity seeker or a mentally disturbed person.  Farmer’s credit card was found at the scene with the body and based on that as well as their earlier conversation with him, Farmer was arrested.  According to court documents, Farmer has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder, and one count of Second Degree Murder.

Police say all of those involved in the case knew each other.  This is the eighth homicide in Sioux Falls so far this year.
