PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Attorney General Marty Jackley says the state has gotten almost $2 million from Janssen Pharmaceuticals as part of an opioid settlement. The payment is part of a nationwide effort to hold companies accountable for their role in the opioid crisis. The funds come from a 2021 agreement in which Johnson & Johnson, Janssen’s parent company, pledged over $5 billion to states. So far, South Dakota has received nearly $5 million and is expected to collect over $9 million from this settlement alone. In total, South Dakota is set to get about $80 million from opioid settlements to support addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.
