SOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into South Dakota, prompting state health officials to warn residents to take precautions. The Department of Health and Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources issued an air quality alert over the weekend as fine particulate pollution rose, and visibility dropped in parts of the state. Doctors note that the tiny particles in wildfire smoke could worsen conditions such as asthma, COPD, and heart disease particularly for children, older adults, and those with chronic illnesses. Residents were urged to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed, and monitor for any changes in breathing. Real-time air quality levels are available at airnow.gov.
