PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota lawmakers are setting an ambitious goal to cut the state’s recidivism rate from 40 percent to 20 percent. A new legislative committee will explore strategies to achieve that goal, including addressing addiction, strengthening re-entry programs, and examining the disproportionate incarceration of Native Americans. Officials say they make up just 9% of the state’s population but account for roughly 40% of its prison population. The committee is scheduled to meet today to begin its work.
