PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota senior citizens and citizens with disabilities have until July 1, 2024, to apply for sales or property tax refunds under South Dakota’s Tax Refund Program.  To be eligible for the sales tax refund, individuals must meet the following qualifications:

Be a South Dakota resident for all of 2023;

Be 65 years old or older on or before January 1, 2023, or disabled at any time during 2023:

Live alone with a yearly income of $16,038 or less OR live in a household with a combined income of $21,692 or less.

The requirements for a rebate on property tax paid include all of the above plus have owned the home one currently lives in for at least three years OR have been a South Dakota resident for the past five years or more.

Those who qualify may receive either a sales tax or property tax refund but not both.  The Tax Refund Office will calculate the refund for each tax and refund the greater amount.  The deadline to apply is July 1, 2024.
