PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The House Health Committee in Pierre voted Tuesday to support funding for respite care following heartfelt testimony from dementia caregivers. The proposed bill allocates half a million dollars to assist families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Currently, the state spends $1 million annually on caregiver support. According to an Alzheimer’s Association representative, 27,000 South Dakotans provide unpaid care. The bill now moves on to the Joint Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
