BROOKINGS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Yesterday morning, a small plane crashed just after takeoff at Brookings Regional Airport. The Beechcraft single-engine aircraft headed to Montana, went down about 200 feet in the air. Witnesses say the plane nose-dived while the pilot attempted to turn back, crashing near the southwest gate of the airport and quickly catching fire. All three people on board escaped before flames engulfed the plane. The pilot and one passenger were airlifted to Sioux Falls with burns and other injuries. A third passenger was treated for minor injuries at Brookings Hospital. Federal investigators from the NTSB and FAA say the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
