The 2-3 Mitchell Kernels boys’ varsity soccer team was in action on the road yesterday in Groton taking on the Groton Area boys soccer team. It was all Mitchell Kernels as the Kernels jumped out to a big first half lead scoring 5 1st half goals and had a big 5 to nothing lead at halftime. They would score five more 2nd half goals and win this game by the final of 10 to nothing. The Mitchell Kernels boys’ varsity soccer team is now 3-3 on the season.
The 1-4 Mitchell Kernels girls varsity soccer team was also in action on the road yesterday in Groton taking on the Groton Area girls soccer team in a defensive first half as the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. The Kernels girls would rally the offense scoring a late 2nd half goal and would win the game by the final of 1 Nil. The Mitchell Kernels girls varsity soccer team is now 2-4 on the season.
The Mitchell Kernels boys’ varsity golf team is on the road in a varsity dual vs Yankton Bucks for the Marchand Cup @ Fox Run GC starting at 2 p.m. The last couple of times out the Mitchell Kernels Boys golfers did well in their second invite of the season finishing in 5th place as a team with a total team score of 306. Asher Dannenbring shot a great round splashing three birdies in route to -1 under 71 to finish in 8th place with a score of 71. Marshall Widstrom was 8th with a 77 score. Carter Mc Cormick finished in 31st place with 78 round score.
Mitchells Everett Morrison finished 43rd with a round total of 80. Jordan Meyerink shot an 81 and the Kernels Brady Reiners shot an 85 finished in 45th and 59th respectively. The Mitchell Kernels boys golf team also had a great showing in Huron in the Huron Invite. The Kernels boys Everett Morrison led the way shooting a +2, 74 and tied for 7th. Asher Dannenbring continued his great play shooting a +5 77 and tied for 20th. Marshall Widstrom was 30th with a 79 score. Carter Mc Cormick finished in 42nd place with 81 round score and the Kernels Brady Reiners shot a +9 81. The Kernel boys Jordan Meyerink carded a 90. The Kernels hit the links today vs Brookings.
The Mitchell Kernels Volleyball team kicked off their 2024 season at home on Friday night at Mitchell HS’s main gym in a very impressive performance beating the visiting Sturgis Scoopers volleyball team winning in straight sets 3 to nothing to win the match. The set scores for the Mitchell Kernels were 25-11, 29-27 and 25-18. The Mitchell Kernels volleyball team is now 1-0 to start the season and take the court next on Thursday September 6TH at SF Washington starting at 7 pm.
The Mitchell Kernels girl’s tennis team is on a roll to start the 2024 season. They won easily in a road dual in on Friday in Rapid City beating Rapid City Christian by the final of 9 to 0. Starting in-flight singles # 1 Megan Mastel won her first match 10 to 7 then in-flight singles #2 Carson Weich was a big winner 10 to 7. The Kernels girls Katie Morgan then followed suit winning by the final of 10 to 5 in her flight # 3 and Elly Clement won her flight # 4 10 to 7 and winning flight singles # 5 was Matteah Graves winning by the final of 10 to nothing and Mia Larson won her flight # six 10 to 1.
The Kernel girls won three straight flights in doubles play over the Vermillion as winning the 1st flight was Megan Mastel and Carson Weich 10 to 7, then Matteah Graves and Elly Clement won flight # two 10-6, Then Katie Morgan and Mia Larson won 10 to 2. The Mitchell Kernels Tennis team is now 8-0 to start the season and 3-0 in ESD Conference play. The Kernel girls’ next match is on the road vs Rapid City Stevens.
The Tigers have now won three matches in a row and are now 3-4 on the season. The DWU Tigers Volleyball team continued their hot play on Saturday dominating Mayville State and winning the match three sets to one. The set wins were 28-26, 25-12, they dropped the 3rd set 25-21 but rallied to take the fourth set and the match winning 25-15. The 2nd match on Saturday was won by Benedictine as they won the match 3 sets to one. The DWU Tigers Volleyball team had a great showing in the Siouxland Invite in Sioux City Iowa on Friday and Saturday going 3 and 1 for the tournament.
The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened their 2024 season at the University of Wisconsin River Fall Invite and took home the 3rd place team prize. The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened the event on Saturday and continued the event on Sunday. The Tigers Allison Meyerink had a great Invite as she tied for 7th with rounds of 80, and 82 for both days.
The DWU Tigers Womens Soccer team played an exhibition match against the University of Minnesota-Crookston on Spetember 1, 2024. The final score was 1-1. The lone score comes from #3 Deandra Johnson with a solid high kick resulting in a score for the Womens Tiger’s. Johnson who scored her goal with 8 minutes left in the 2nd half.
The Tigers pack their bags and hit the road to play in another exhibition match against Martin Luther College. The game is set for September 4th at 4:30p.m.
The Twins Trevor Larnach homered to help the Twins beat the Rays 5-4 on Monday night. The Twins earned a second straight victory for the first time since they won three in a row from Aug. 15-17. They remained 3 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland and moved a game ahead of Kansas City for the AL’s second wild-card spot.
Five Minnesota relievers combined for 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Jorge Alcala (4-3) got four outs for the win, and Jhoan Duran handled the ninth for his 21st save in 23 chances. The Twins take the diamond tonight at 5:50 pm vs the Rays looking to close the gap in the A.L. Central against the Cleveland Guardians.
