The Mitchell Kernels girls varsity tennis team in now 12-1 in duals after a very impressive weekend series as the Mitchell Kernels girls’ varsity tennis team is on a roll to start the 2024 season. They won in a home dual at Hitchcock Park beating Aberdeen Central by the final of 5 to 4. Leading off in-flight singles # 1 was Megan Mastel who lost her first match in a close one 6-4,6-1, then in-flight singles #2 Carson Weich was a big winner 6-4 6-4. The Kernels girls Katie Morgan then lost a very tough 3 set match in her flight # 3 and Elly Clement lost her flight # 4 in a three-set back-and-forth match.

The Kernel girls also won flight singles # 5 as Matteah Graves won by the final of 6-2, 6-0 and Mia Larson won her flight # six 6-2, 6-1. The Kernel girls won two out of three straight flights in doubles play over Aberdeen Central as losing a close doubles match in the 1st flight was Megan Mastel and Carson Weich, then Matteah Graves and Elly Clement won flight # two 6-0, 6-1, Then Katie Morgan and Mia Larson won flight doubles # 3 6-3, 6-2.

The Kernel girls’ varsity tennis team won in straight sets in the second match of the day over the Brandon Valley girls varsity tennis team in winning 9 to nothing. The Mitchell Kernels Tennis team is now 12-1 to start the season in duals play and is 3-0 in ESD Conference play. The Kernel girls’ next match is Thursday in a varsity dual vs SF Washington starting at 4 p.m.

9AA No. 1 Parkston Trojans won easily over Kimble White Lake winning by the final of 26 to 0 as Parkston racked up over 300 rushing yards as the Trojans blanked Kimball/White Lake during Friday’s football action. Running backs Kolter Kramer and Kaden Holzbauer led the charge combining for 223 yards on 19 carries, including a touchdown run by Kramer. Carter Sommer finished 4-for-6 passing with 102 yards and two passing touchdowns.

Kolter Kramer reeled in a 19-yard touchdown, while Holzbauer caught a 5-yard touchdown as well. Mason Jervik and Gage Jodozi each caught one pass, combining for 78 yards. KWL’s Iden Myers ran 20 times for 92 yards, Park Sinclair and Keaton Christensen each had 28 passing yards, while Dayn Goodman caught three passes for 53 yards in the loss.

Class 9B No. 1 Avon Pirates remained undefeated crushing Burke 60 to 7 behind another strong game from running back Aziah Meyer. Aziah Meyer rushed for 105 yards on nine carries and scored three rushing touchdowns, including a 58-yard touchdown run. Grayson Ratzlaff rushed for 55 yards and scored on a kickoff return. Landon Mudder scored two rushing touchdowns, while he returned an interception for a score. Trent Soukup added a rushing touchdown. Burke’s Jayder Schonebaum threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Bartling in the loss.

The Hanson Beavers picked up their first win of the season over De Smet winning 25 to 8 as Hansons Sutton Dewald rushed for 128 yards as Hanson defeated De Smet in Friday high school football action. Sutton Dewald carried the ball 14 times and scored a touchdown. Stetson Riggs had a rushing touchdown, while Esten Schlimgen threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Weston Kayser. Nate Wilber added a 25-yard field goal. Kayser rushed for 70 yards on 11 carries. Schlimgen completed 8-for-13 passes for 147 yards. Dewald posted nine tackles and Radek Jarding had a sack. De Smet’s Ganon Henrich rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown in the loss.

The DWU women’s golf team is back on the links today after a very impressive performance the last time out as the DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened their 2024 season at the University of Wisconsin River Fall Invite and took home the 3rd place team prize. The DWU Tigers Womens Golf team opened the event on Friday and continued the event on Saturday. The Tigers Allison Meyerink had a great Invite as she tied for 7th with rounds of 80, and 82 for both days.

The DWU volleyball teams is also back on the court today after their last stunning victory as the Tigers Volleyball team opened last Wednesday in Forest City Iowa vs their GPAC rival in the Waldorff Warriors volleyball team. It was all Lady Tigers on Wednesday taking the first match in three sets vs Waldorff dominating the first set 25-21, then winning 2 more straight sets by the final of 25-13, 25-8 to close out the sets and win the match. The Tigers have now won one match in a row and are now 5-5 on the season.

The DWU Tigers Volleyball team continued their hot play last Saturday dominating Mayville State and winning the match three sets to one. The set wins were 28-26, 25-12, they dropped the 3rd set 25-21 but rallied to take the fourth set and the match winning 25-15. The 2nd match on Saturday was won by Benedictine as they won the match 3 sets to one. The DWU Tigers Volleyball team had a great showing in the Siouxland Invite in Sioux City Iowa on Friday and Saturday going 3 and 1 for the tournament. The Tiger open their 2024 home schedule tonight at the Christian Family Athletic Center starting at 7 p.m.

The Minnesota Twins host the Los Angeles Angels Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. CDT as it will be the Angels: Griffin Canning (5-12, 5.87 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 80 strikeouts); Twins: Pablo Lopez (14-8, 4.05 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 58 strikeouts) The Minnesota Twins look to end a four-game skid when they play the Los Angeles Angels.

The Minnesota Vikings picked up their 1st win of the season on Sunday as Byron Murphy Jr. batted away a fourth-down pass near the goal line late in the fourth quarter to ensure a touchdown-free afternoon for a revamped defense. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores bolted onto the field in a boisterous show of appreciation, shouting praise and pumping his arm as if the Vikings had just pulled out a last-second victory.What a difference a scheme can make, especially with healthy and proven players to fit. Harrison Smith, who contributed an end-zone interception to the domination of quarterback Daniel Jones and the Giants en route to a 28-6 win on Sunday.

Daniel Jones went 22 for 42 for 186 yards, five sacks and two interceptions, the first of which was returned 10 yards for a touchdown by Andrew Van Ginkel that drew even some of the defensive coaches into the end-zone celebration. The Vikings limited Jones to 15 yards on six rushes, an important statistic Smith noted in alluding to their struggle against Jones in the playoffs two years ago.
