MITCHELL, S.D. (Mitchell Now) – A strong blast of November cold is on the way, and with it comes the likelihood that Mitchell could see its first snowflakes of the season. The National Weather Service says a cold front pushing through late this week will send temperatures tumbling from the 50s into the 30s by Sunday, with overnight lows dipping into the teens.

Meteorologists say the change will be noticeable. Friday’s mild and breezy conditions will give way to a gray, chilly Saturday and an even colder Sunday — a setup that could lead to light snow or flurries as moisture interacts with subfreezing air.

A Dramatic Drop in Temperatures

Friday will start with relatively comfortable fall weather, topping out around 54 °F under partly cloudy skies. But by Saturday, clouds will thicken and highs will struggle to reach the mid-40s before dropping sharply after sunset. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to around 21 °F.

Sunday’s high? Only about 33 °F — the coldest day of the season so far. With temperatures hovering near or below freezing, any lingering moisture could easily transition to snow, marking the first measurable flakes for Mitchell this fall.

Prepare for Slick Surfaces and Windy Conditions

While accumulation is expected to remain light, forecasters warn that even a thin coating of snow could make roads and sidewalks slippery, especially Sunday morning. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and to watch for slick spots on bridges and shaded areas.

Residents should also plan to bundle up, as northwesterly winds will make it feel even colder. “It’s a good weekend to dig out the winter coat and gloves,” the National Weather Service noted in its Thursday forecast discussion.

Early Signs of Winter

The shift marks a clear transition toward winter weather across southeastern South Dakota. Local forecasters say these first snowfalls often serve as a reminder for residents to check their vehicles, restock cold-weather gear, and prepare for the months ahead.

Although no major storm system is on the horizon, this weekend’s cold front signals that the season’s milder days are fading fast. By early next week, daytime highs are expected to remain in the 30s before gradually rebounding.
