The State B Baseball Tournament saw a great matchup last night as Pony Hills League 3 B District champion was battling the defending State B champions who advanced to the quarterfinals after a 9-6 victory over the Pony Hills League champion Kimball/White Lake Nationals Tuesday night at Cadwell Park.
And it didn’t take long for Canova to pick-up where they left off in round one, plating three runs in the top of the first inning with a Jason Miller RBI-single and a Kendall Gassman two-RBI single as well on Kimball/White Lake’s Ethan Price.
Canova tallied 16 total hits in the win, including seven different players tallying multiple hits. KWL was able to get on the board in the fifth on a Jonny Lyons RBI-single but was quickly matched in the seventh on an error by third baseman Dylanger Pierson to make it 9-1 going into the last half inning.
The Nationals were down to its final two outs of the season when it surged a late rally getting bases loaded, driving in five runs on a walk and a grand slam by Lyons. Canova, Jason Miller allowed one hit in 1.2 innings while striking out three to earn the victory. Justin Miller, Jared Miller, Garrett Gassman, Kendall Gassman, Cole Gassman, Kalub Carmichel, and Tim Gassman each collected two hits, combining for five RBIs.
The second game last night was a bit of a blowout as the Del Rapids PBR knocked out the Milbank Fire Chiefs by the final of 13 to 3. The biggest reason for the win was Madison pick-up player Heith Williams drove in four runs, Trey Randel struck out 10 batters and Dell Rapids PBR will face a familiar foe in the Class B quarterfinals.
Heith Williams finished 2-for-5 and drove in four runs. Drew Sweeter recorded three hits and three RBI. Brayden Pankonen finished 4-for-4 and knocked in three runs. Brayden Pankonen also struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Milbank finished with just four hits, with Kellen Krause, Taylor Boerger, Dom Boerger and Brady Krause recording hits. Taylor Boerger took the loss, allowing six hits, four earned runs and struck out three batters in his five-inning start.
Dell Rapids PBR will play Canova at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Class B quarterfinals.

Tonight’s action at Cadwell Park features the Sunshine League winner the Winner Colome Pheasants vs the Mount Vernon Mustangs at 5:30 to be followed by the Garretson Blue Jays vs the Pony Hill team Four Corners starting at 7:30 p.m.
The best men’s and women’s golfers in South Dakota were in Rapid City this past weekend at beautiful Meadowbrook Golf Course for the 2024 SDGA Amateur Championship as Kevin Gillick of Rapid City is the Men’s Champion and Reese Jansa of Sioux Falls is the Women’s Championship. It is the first SDGA Championship for Kevin and the 11th for Reese Jansa.
The DWU men’s Elite Basketball Camp is on Saturday August 17TH and are for boys’ basketball players who will learn basic to advanced technique that feature progressive drills that will improve an individual’s game so they will be more skilled at the high school level. The camp instructors are the DWU men’s basketball coaches and players. The boys’ basketball camps are designed for instruction and coaching in and will be given in small groups to help campers master the skills that are covered. The DWU boys’ basketball camps are for boys entering the 9th grade through 12th grade. Check-in time is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday’s schedule is 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The DWU boys’ elite basketball camp is $40 per camper. The DWU basketball camps are being taught at the Avera Sports Complex. The fourth and final game of the day on Friday at the 92 annual State B Tournament Amateur Baseball games included the 3B District tournament winner from the Pony Hills League the Kimble White Lake Nationals vs the Northville Merchants and this game was all Kimble White Lake Nationals as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning by the final of 7 to 1. Caden Lenz powered the Kimble White Lake Nationals offense going 1 for 3 at the plate and scoring a run and driving in two runs. The Nationals Mitchell Price was stellar on the mound tossing a complete game three hitter only allowing one run while striking out 10.
