WESSINGTON SPRINGS, SD (MITCHELL NOW) A 12-year old Wessington Springs student who was injured after being struck by a vehicle on January 26th has passed away. The True Dakotan reports that an email was sent to the school community on Sunday by Wessington Springs School Superintendent Dr. Michael Ormsmith. Officials say heavy fog was a factor in the crash that killed Reba Carothers after she was hit by a 20-year old who was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion. Carothers was trying to board a school bus when she was struck. In his email, Dr. Ormsmith shared that the school district will have several supports available.
A planned benefit fundraiser scheduled for tonight will go on as scheduled with funds directed to the Carothers family. The benefit, which will be held in conjunction with the Spartans boys basketball game against Wolsey-Wessington, includes a free will nacho or pork sandwich meal, silent auction, 50/50 drawing, and a “Chuck A Duck” contest.
